You do your best to take care of your mouth. You brush and floss every day, and you attend your regular dental cleanings and exams. However, sometimes, emergencies happen. They can happen at any time, and many require immediate care. At Kenneth G. Wallis DDS Family and Cosmetic dentistry, we provide emergency care to help protect your oral health.

Types of Dental Emergencies

There are numerous types of dental emergencies:
•  Toothaches. Toothaches can be caused by one of several different issues. Sometimes they are caused by having food lodged between your teeth. Other times, they may be caused by untreated tooth decay, an infection in your tooth, trauma or other damage. While having food stuck is not a major issue, infections or other damage needs to be addressed right away.
•  Lost crowns or fillings. Crowns and fillings are designed to protect your tooth from bacteria. If you lose either, the affected tooth is at risk of developing an infection.
•  Broken tooth. A broken tooth can cause harm to your sensitive oral tissues. It is also at risk for infection depending upon how severe the break is.
•  An avulsed tooth. When your tooth is knocked out, it is important to take action quickly to save it (if possible). Missing teeth have serious consequences on your oral health.
•  Swollen jaw. A swollen jaw can be indicative of an abscess. An abscess is a sign of an infection in your tooth or your gums. The abscess forms as a way to contain the infection. As the infection grows, the abscess grows, and can potentially burst.
•  Possible fractured jaw. A fractured jaw can cause serious issues and needs to be addressed right away. If we cannot see you immediately, it may be recommended that you go to the emergency room.

Managing Your Emergency Until Your Appointment

We will do our best to get you in as soon as possible in a dental emergency. Until your appointment, there are several things you can do:
•  Brush and floss your teeth if something is lodged, these actions will help to remove it, which can alleviate your pain.
•  Take an over the counter pain reliever.
•  Avoid foods that are very hot or very cold.
•  Rest an ice pack on the side of the mouth where you are experiencing pain. Alternate 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
•  Rinse your mouth with a salt water rinse. This can help to reduce swelling and can draw out bacteria.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While you cannot always predict or stop, a dental emergency, there are steps you can take to prevent them from occurring:
•  Brush and floss your teeth. This will help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
•  Avoid chewing on anything hard, such as ice, popcorn kernels, and hard candies. You should also avoid habits such as biting your fingernails or chewing pens.
•  Do not use your teeth to open packaging or remove clothing tags.
•  Always wear a mouth guard when you play sports.
