Dentures and Partial Dentures

Your teeth may be a small part of your body, but they have several important features. They are the first step in the digestive process, breaking down the foods you eat. They help you to form certain words and sounds when you speak. They provide you with a beautiful smile. When you lose your teeth, all of these functions are affected. At Kenneth G. Wallis DDS, Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we provide you with options for replacing missing teeth. One of your options is dentures, both full and partial.

Consequences of Missing Teeth

Tooth loss comes with a multitude of consequences:
•  Eating becomes more of a challenge. You may find it difficult to thoroughly chew your food, which can lead to malnutrition
•  Speaking is more difficult. Not only do you have trouble talking, but others may also have difficulty understanding you.
•  Your smile, and your confidence, are negatively impacted.
•  Any remaining healthy teeth can shift from their natural position, and migrate into the empty spaces left behind by missing teeth. This throws off your bite, which can cause serious TMJ pain.

Dentures have been used for decades to replace missing teeth. They are a removable prosthetic device that consists of false teeth set into a gum-colored base. The base is supported by your gums, designed to be held in place by suction. Thanks to technological developments, dentures are no longer the uncomfortable, bulky prosthetic teeth they used to be. They are made to be more comfortable and are better customized to look more natural. Dentures can be made to replace a full arch of teeth or sections of missing teeth.

Full Dentures

Full dentures are made to replace a full arch of missing teeth, whether it is the top arch, the bottom, or even both. They are created from molds of your mouth. Before the molds are taken, any remaining unhealthy teeth are extracted. The molds are then sent to a lab, where the dentures are custom created.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are made for replacing areas in your mouth that are missing several consecutive teeth, preventing the need to extract perfectly healthy teeth. Their design is almost identical to that of full dentures—false teeth in a gum-colored base that rests on your gums—with one extra addition. Partial dentures have small metal clasps on them that attach to your healthy teeth, helping them to stay in place better.

Reap the Benefits of Dentures

Dentures offer several benefits:
•  Restoration of your smile.
•  Your ability to eat improves. You can also chew your food more completely, which can improve your digestion.
•  Better speech. Not only does speaking become easier, but those around you can also understand what you are saying.
•  Partial dentures can help to hold your natural teeth in their natural position.
•  Your facial appearance is improved. Dentures help to fill out your face, avoiding the sunken in appearance that ages you beyond your years.

Don’t let your missing teeth get in the way of the function and beauty of your smile. Contact Kenneth G. Wallis DDS, Family and Cosmetic Dentistry today at (408) 248-6777 to find out if dentures are right for you.
